Jam or cream first? Now THAT is the question…

Afternoon tea is a much-loved English tradition, believed to have been created by the 7th Duchess of Bedford back in 1840.
But if you’ve ever been to Devon or Cornwall you’ll probably be aware of a long-standing dispute between residents of the two counties. Namely whether the ‘correct’ way is to spread the clotted cream or the jam onto the scone first.
Devonshire cream teas are served with cream on the bottom and jam on top, whereas Cornish folk believe that the only way to eat a cream tea is with the jam first, then the cream.
Luckily, here in Shakespeare’s England, we can decide for ourselves exactly how we wish to assemble our scones. And we’re spoiled with lots of places on our doorstep where we can indulge in this afternoon delight…
If you’re out and about in Stratford-upon-Avon, you’ll find afternoon tea served in many of the town’s best restaurants and hotels, including The Arden, the Falcon Hotel and the Royal Shakespeare Theatre’s Rooftop Restaurant. Meanwhile, for a fully authentic experience, head for the historic Hathaway Tea Rooms.
There are just as many fabulous options for afternoon tea in Warwick, including 'The Brethren's Kitchen' at the Lord Leycester Hospital. Over near Leamington, you might like to treat yourself to a luxurious afternoon tea at The Brasserie at Mallory Court.
Other alternatives in the region include afternoon tea at The Bell in Alderminster and Dormy House, a boutique hotel near Broadway, which has recently launched a brand new afternoon tea in its Garden Room Restaurant.
