Probably for the first time ever, this remarkable concert joins three of the 20th century’s finest pieces for string orchestra to the works by which they were inspired and on which they were based.
Audiences will be able to appreciate first hand the influence and effect of Arcangelo Corelli on Tippett, Frank Bridge on Britten, and Thomas Tallis on Vaughan-Williams, with Orchestra of the Swan and Verba et Musica performing each pairing without interruption or applause.
To complement these Fantasias and Variations, the Festival’s Artistic Director, Matthew Boyden, has written an arrangement of Spem in alium for string orchestra, to be performed alongside Tallis’ original 40-part motet.
Corelli – Concerto Grosso in F, Op.6 no2
Tippett – Fantasia Concertante on a theme of Corelli
Tallis – Spem in alium (Choir only)
Tallis – Spem in alium (arr for 23 strings, Matthew Boyden)
Frank Bridge – Three Idylls for String Quartet
Britten – Variations on a theme of Frank Bridge
Tallis – When Rising from the Bed of Death
Vaughan Williams – Fantasia on a theme by Thomas Tallis
Conductor – Stacey Watton
