Located in the historic centre of Coventry, next to the Cathedral ruins, the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum is the cultural hub of the city. With a selection of permanent galleries and temporary exhibition spaces, along with a whole host of ongoing workshops and events, the Herbert offers a great day out. Our fantastic family offer was recognised when we won the Guardian Family Friendly Museum Award in 2010.


Discover what life was really like in Coventry through the centuries, through personal stories, historical films and our amazing collections. Wander through dazzling interactive displays and investigate the natural world, modern art, and the old masters in our eight permanent galleries. Explore a wide range of exhibitions, many from prestigious national museums, in the temporary exhibition spaces.


Our modern building is fully accessible to people with disabilities and we offer baby changing facilities, café, gift shop, history centre and archives and media suites. We also cater for events and corporate hire.

By Car

At  Coventry inner ring-road, turn off at Junction 3 or 5 and follow the brown signs for the Herbert. There are several Pay & Display car parks available within walking distance. For directions using sat-nav or route planners use the postcode CV1 5QP. Alternatively, a park and ride service for the city centre is operated from War Memorial Park, Kenilworth Road in the south of the City.

By Bus

All buses terminate in the city centre, and most buses stop at Pool Meadow bus station. The Herbert is approximately 5 minutes walk from Pool Meadow, and 10 minutes from most other stopping places in the city centre. There are signposts across the city directing people to the Herbert, and we are situated next to the Cathedral so are easy to find.

Normal opening hours (including bank holidays) are: Monday – Saturday: 10.00am – 4.00pm Sunday: 12.00pm – 4.00pm


The Herbert Art Gallery & Museum has a range of features designed to improve accessibility.

There is level access to each gallery floor and transfer between floors by lift.

There are accessible toilets on both ground and first floors.

Baby-change facilities are on the ground floor. The Herbert is proud to be breastfeeding friendly.

Gallery text panels and printed information has been designed to be easy to read.
