Macdonald Alveston Manor Hotel
The Macdonald Alveston Manor has a long and interesting history dating back from before the Norman Conquest.
The first building on the site is thought to have been an Anchorite cell, circa 960. Later a small monastery was built by monks from Worcester. The same monks also erected the first wooden bridge to improve the original ford that was used to cross the river.
Alveston Manor is referred to in the Doomsday Book and in 1086 it was seized from Wultan, Bishop of Worcester.
In 1562, during the reign of Elizabeth 1, the Manor building was sold to Sir Ambrose Cave for £1007 3s 6d. Sir Cave later sold it to Ludovic Greville. In turn his son sold the property in 1603 to Richard Lane; whose father’s effigy is affixed to the walls of the Saxon church remains in Alveston.
The present building is a wonderful myriad of different historical periods. The Manor Bar contains 16th century panelling; the centre of the house is Elizabethan; the gable nearest the road is from the era of William & Mary and the widows in the centre of the building are Queen Anne.
