The Church Street Townhouse in Stratford-upon-Avon is one of my favourite places, a beautiful boutique hotel and restaurant on Church Street. A short stroll from the Royal Shakespeare Theatres, it is the perfect spot for pre theatre dinner and drinks but is also a great place to haul up for a night with a bottle of wine.

The restaurant launched its new menu on Friday 18th September and my husband and I went to check it out and we were certainly in for a treat.

To start we were recommended the new townhouse broth, a beautiful concoction of chicken and herbs, served in a cafetière no less, fancy some would say, but it made for an impressive starter. For mains we had the fish of the day, arctic chara favourite of Rick Stein’s we were informed, and I can see why, take salmon and trout, mix them together and you have got the perfect fish dish. We also tried the monkfish, which was cooked to perfection, with cockles, barley and tomatoes to accompany, you can’t go far wrong. Venison, calves liver and pork ribs all feature on the new menu and our fellow diners were full of praise for the new tasty meat dishes.

Make sure you save room for pudding though, as the dessert menu is very special. The deconstructed apple cheesecake was truly delicious and quite simply was one of the best cheesecakes we have ever had. The chocolate orange was a sight to behold and without spoiling it, you are in for a spot of theatre at the table, well worth ordering, although probably worth sharing, its super rich!

Recently coeliac accredited and with many gluten free options, just ask the lovely townhouse staff if you have special dietary requirements and they will tailor dishes just for you.

My husband likes a drop of whisky and with a choice of over 40; I had to drag him out of the place before he made his way through the whole list! I am also partial to a glass or 2 of champagne, and with Champagne Friday, a weekly event (house champagne is £20 a bottle between 5-6pm on a Friday) you can easily start the night here at 5pm and still be there at 11pm!

If you are looking for somewhere to indulge in a romantic dinner for two in Shakespeare’s England, then head to Church Street Townhouse, go on treat yourselves!

Booking essential on weekends, mid-week walk up tables are available.
